HISTORY OF LEGO EDUCATION WEDO

Updated: Nov 6, 2020

The LEGO® EDUCATION WeDo 2.0 robots may not be a type of robots that will go buy the breakfast every day or take care of your grandfather, but it could teach many things that will help you in your life from computational thinking to building LEGO® models. Since the creation of the MINDSTORMS Platform in 1998, LEGO Have tried to create an Educational Platform for Elementary School Students that would help them learn STEM in easy and fun ways. The first version of WeDo (9580) was released in 2009, it included two sensors, one motor and a USB Smart Hub. In 2016 WdDo 2.0 (45300) was released, with upgraded sensors, motors and Smart Hub.

WeDo 1.0-9580

The WeDo 1.0 Construction Set includes 158 LEGO Pieces in addition to two WeDo sensors (tilt sensor and motion sensor), one WeDo 1.0 /Power Functions Motor and a USB Hub which is responsible for controlling and powering the WeDo 1.0 set although this means you don't need another power source, building mobile robots with WeDo 1.0 is impossible.

WeDo 2.0-45300

The WEDO 2.0 Core Set includes 280 LEGO Pieces in addition to a two WEDO sensors (tilt sensor and motion sensor), one WEDO 2.0 Motor and a programmable Smart Hub that connects to a computer or tablet via Bluetooth. The Smart Hub is powered by either two AA batteries or a rechargeable battery pack (purchased separately).

SUMMARY:

POWER:

  • LEGO WeDo 1.0 is powered via USB from a computer. There's no rechargeable battery, models must be tethered to the computer. This does mean that you don't need another power source.

  • LEGO WeDo 2.0 is powered via AA batteries by default (normal or rechargeable) and models are not tethered to the computer giving more building options.

CONNECTION:

  • LEGO WeDo 1.0 controls models via the USB connection. Which make building moveable creations impossible.

  • LEGO WeDo 2.0 uses Bluetooth low energy from a computer to a 'Smart Hub' which gets built into models.

MAIN PARTS:

  • LEGO WeDo 1.0 includes the USB Hub, one motor, a tilt sensor and a motion sensor.

  • LEGO WeDo includes the Smart Hub (which has a programmable light built-in), a motor, a tilt sensor and a motion sensor.

BUILDING PARTS:

  • LEGO WeDo 1.0 includes 150 building elements.

  • LEGO WeDo 2.0 includes 280 building elements.
